Its not all bad….realistically we desperately needed some moisture, not just for corn and maize crops, but also for grass growth, some warmth would be good though! Typical that it comes at a time when most people want to go cutting. I have to say that it is noticeable that many people have muck contamination in the bottom of the grass from applications of slurry on to dry ground. Dribble bars are not my favourite and often exaggerate the issue, so if you’re investing in the future then I would personally edge towards trailing shoe or injection. This muck contamination means that my requirement for 30-35 dry matter silage is now a must as muck will stick to wetter silage and is likely to cause you poor fermentation and feed out. if possible cut high 2 3/4″ -3″ stubbles please, as this will help as you won’t need to rake hard and so can leave the muck in the field, but drying is key. lets hope the weather improves and gives you more than just a limited cutting window to achieve great forage.
